Are You Really Reading What You Want?

I’m in my late 20’s and I try to read a book every week. If I live a healthy 85 years, I only have another 3,000 or so books to read in my lifetime.

3,000 books may seem like a lot, but if you consider the number of books out there (even the number of books produced yearly is massive) 3,000 is pretty slim pickings.

So now I am reading what I truly want to read.

Don’t be Afraid to Put Down a Bad Book

I used to tell myself that I had to finish a book if I started it. But some books just don’t hold my interest. Or, they simply aren’t written well. So they’re not worth my time. Or yours. Don’t be afraid to stop reading a book that has a slow story line, an unacceptable amount of grammatical errors, etc. If you don’t want to read it anymore, put it down. Move on to something you do want to read.

Don’t be Afraid to Say No

There may be times when you do want to read the books your friend, spouse, teacher, colleague, or mom recommends. And that is great. But if ever someone recommends a book you don’t want to read, don’t feel obligated to read it. Don’t be afraid to tell that person you appreciate the recommendation but don’t think it would be a good fit for you. Don’t read a book just because someone told you to.

Don’t be Afraid of Library Fines

There have been a few times when I haven’t had as much time for reading as I prefer. Books from the library lay forgotten as I try to balance my baby, fold a load of laundry, and cook dinner. By the time I get around to reading the book I risk a fine from the library so I return the book. I then move on to the next book on my list and forget to read the book, or I have to go through the wait list again. If it’s a book I really want to read, it’s worth paying a small fine in order to finish the book.

Don’t Read the Same Book Twice

Bear with me on this one. There may be times you want to read a book again. If you have kids, you’ll definitely be reading the same books over and over and over. But if you start a book you’ve already read, just be sure it is one you truly want to read again.
