Advice Every Writer Needs to Hear

I’ve received a blogging recognition award! This is really exciting, and I want to thank Jessie at Nerdy Book Life for the nomination. Be sure to check out her blog for motivational lifestyle posts, awesome nerdiness, and of course BOOKS!

As part of the award, this special post will explain how The Writing Pal got started and it will offer two pieces of advice every writer needs to hear.

How The Writing Pal Began

I don’t think I’ve ever told the story of The Writing Pal’s creation. I used to run a blog about family life. I’d post recipes and fun activities to do with kids. Which is pretty funny, because I didn’t have any kids (nor was I pregnant) when I started blogging about family life.

I ran out of content as quickly as my motivation fizzled out. Family will always come first in my life, but writing about it just wasn’t my passion. So I took a step back, and realized that I wanted to write about writing.

I’ve always been a writer. I studied literature, creative writing, and editing in school, and wanted to share what I’d learned with others. I felt like my education and what I was constantly teaching myself would be of value to others.

So, I began planning my blog—creating categories, brainstorming a blog name, and drafting blog posts. I was amazed at how much I had to say and how much I enjoyed what I was doing. And I haven’t looked back since!

Have Writing Goals and a Writing Plan

Whether you simply dream of putting pen to paper or you’re the next J.K. Rowling (heck, even if you are J.K. Rowling) it’s important to have goals.

Goals give you a sense of purpose and are an excellent way to keep you motivated. When you have a goal that you want to achieve you are more likely to put forth the necessary effort. Dreams can become realities when you are motivated by the right goal.

A plan is critical to successfully accomplishing your goals. A plan will lay out exactly how you will accomplish your goals. If you set a goal, but don’t know how you will achieve it, odds are you won’t. A good goal is so much more attainable when accompanied by a good plan.

Don’t be Afraid to Experiment

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned as a writer (and as a human being!) is the importance of experimenting. Life is full of wonderful and amazing things. By being curious and willing to experiment, we learn the most.

Not only will experimenting infuse you with ideas and experiences to write about, it will help you discover who you are as a writer. Every writer is different and what works for one might not work for you. But the best way to find out is to experiment. For example, maybe you write best in the privacy of your own home. Maybe you write better in a noisy, public coffee shop. The only real way to know is to try both.

Never be afraid to try something new.
