A Letter of Encouragement for All Aspiring Authors

Dear Not Author,

We will not be publishing your book. #SorryNotSorry

The Editor

Sometimes this is what it feels like a rejection letter might as well say, right. Rejection letters hurt. They’re never fun. But they are a part of the writing journey for all aspiring authors. Each rejection letter puts you one step closer to success. But sometimes that thought doesn’t do much to comfort. The sting of rejection is still strong. And that’s okay!

I believe there are some aspiring authors out there who proudly collect rejection letters as their way of handling the disappointment of them. Turn it into a game or a contest to see how many you collect before you get an acceptance letter. But that just doesn’t work for some people. I know it won’t work for me. I think it’s okay to have some things we just can’t fake feeling excited about.

It’s okay to feel the sorrow, maybe shed a tear or two. 😉 But the worst thing you can do is to give up. That is the only sure way to eliminate all chances of your story being published. As long as you keep trying there is always hope for success.

Can I say that again?

As long as you keep trying there is always hope for success. Aspiring authors can be published authors.

But how can you get past the crushed feeling when you receive yet another rejection letter? What if you had a letter of encouragement to read after receiving a rejection letter?

That’s my gift to you today.

Dear Aspiring Author,

Future Reader here. I don’t know it yet, but I NEED your story. So don’t give up on it. Someday, I’m going to read your book. Maybe I’ll find it in a bookstore, in a dazzling display or highlighted as a staff pick. Maybe I’ll find it at my local library, well-worn having been read and cherished by many previous readers. Perhaps It’ll be a recommendation from a friend. Or I’ll buy it from Amazon after reading dozens of raving reviews.

However I find it, someday your book is going to inspire me. Maybe it will be your witty characters or ingenious plot. I’ll fall in love with the way you combine words and structure your sentences. I’ll stay up late into the night, telling myself I’ll read one more chapter only to realize it’s 3 am, and I’ve read the whole book.

Your story might be the perfect escape from a difficult reality. It could change the way I think and perceive the world around me. Or maybe it will explore a difficult topic present in my own life and help me heal.

Maybe your book will save me.

But only if you publish it. So don’t quit. Keep trying. Don’t give up on your story. Don’t give up on me. I won’t give up on you. I’m rooting for you. I want you to succeed. I’m here, waiting. Please don’t let me down.

I believe in you. Now go believe in yourself. You totally got this!

Best Wishes,

Future Reader
